Field note
The EDW that ended up driving billing
A conformed cross-line-of-business customer view became so good that enterprise billing was driven from it — and it became untouchable.
The clearest case I have seen was a genuinely well-architected EDW that had built an excellent cross-line-of-business view of enterprise customers — exactly the sort of conformed asset a good warehouse is supposed to produce. It was so much better than anything the operational estate held that enterprise billing came to be driven from it. At that point it was carrying billions of dollars of revenue, and it had become effectively untouchable. No amount of technical migration confidence gets you permission to move that.
