What has changed in this guide, and when.

A living guide is only worth more than a static one if you can see that it is alive.

2026-08

  • Initial publication. Restructured from a single working document into per-concept pages, append-only registers and standalone field notes.
  • Added: complexity over volume as the method-selection driver; the twelve-hour rule and modular/rolling-catch-up pattern; the two-archetype split; performance problems as a certainty rather than a risk; divergence and the burden of proof.
  • Field notes added: two 35TB migrations; the Teradata proposal that never happened; the EDW that ended up driving billing; nine months to prove we were right; the weekend I called abort twice.
  • Outstanding: team and roles is a placeholder; throughput and sizing figures are not yet published.

These are my own views, written from years of building and moving large Oracle data platforms. They are not Oracle’s official guidance and this is not Oracle documentation. Volatile product claims are quarantined in Product facts that will date.
